Ja ihr lest richtig, Microsoft stellt von seinem Research-Projekt Singularity den Quellcode zum Download bereit. Der Grund ist, dass Microsoft vor etwa 17 Jahren seine Research-Forschungsabteilung gegründet hat (MSR), welches abseits von Windows, Office und Co. Produkte entwickelt. Eines davon ist das OpenSource Betriebssystem Singularity.

Es basiert dabei nicht auf dem Quellcode von Windows, sondern ist ein von Grund auf neu entwickeltes Betriebssystem. Dabei unterliegt es der nicht-kommerziellen Academic Shared Source License, sodass es für jeden zum Download bereit steht. Dabei wird Singularity mittels dem sogenannten Research Developer Kit (RDK) auf Codeplex zum Download für Jedermann angeboten.

Der Betriebssystem - Prototyp wurde komplett mit der erweiterten C# Programmiersprache geschrieben. Also mithilfe von Managed-Code, sodass das Programm Fehlertoleranter für den Entwickler ist. Wer Singularity weiterentwickeln will, sollte sozusagen das Microsoft eigene Visual Studio installiert haben, um die Kompatibilität zu wahren - weitere Information liegen dem Archiv bei. Das Projekt Singularity wird dabei durch CodePlex für alle Programmierer kostenlos zum Download angeboten. Dabei umfasst es etwa 60MByte. Um die Weiterentwicklung zu beginnen, sollte man einen aktuellen Computer sein eigen nennen.

The Singularity source code contains all of the sources and tools required to build and boot Singularity. However, the Singularity source code does not contain a source code editor; you must provide these tools yourself. You‟ll need approximately 250MB of free disk space to install and 1.5GB of free disk space to build Singularity plus all the applications and 512MB of available RAM.
